What to Expect When You Hire an Interior Designer: The JND Process

When you hire an interior designer, you’re not just hiring someone to make things look beautiful, you’re choosing a partner who can transform the way you live. At Jessica Nelson Design, we believe good design should feel effortless, timeless, and deeply personal. As an interior design team specializing in refined yet livable spaces, our process is built to take the guesswork and stress out of creating a home that truly feels like you.

Many clients come to us unsure of what to expect, assuming design help is reserved for large-scale projects or extravagant budgets. In reality, luxury interior design is about intentionality and creating spaces that balance form and function while reflecting your lifestyle. At JND, we define “luxury” not by size or cost, but by craftsmanship, cohesion, and the feeling of coming home to something special.

Here’s how we work with you to create the home of your dreams.

Inspiration Phase: Ensuring we’re on the same page

The first step of the project is deeply collaborative. We take the time to understand how you live and what inspires you. We’ll talk through your goals, budget, and priorities, ensuring clarity from the start.

At this point, you’ll share your ideas and inspirations for each room on Pinterest. This step helps us align on the overall vision and style before diving into detailed designs. They’ll be the anchor for key spaces, but we’ll ensure all rooms feel cohesive.

With a clear understanding of your goals, our team develops a visual mood board for your project. This is when we bring ideas to life in a way that feels both exciting and grounded.

Design Phase: Selecting the details for your home

Once your concept is approved, we move into the design stage. This is where our technical expertise meets creativity. We create floor plans, elevations, and custom millwork drawings; source furnishings and finishes; and refine every selection until the design is fully realized. We present complete design concepts per room for you to review and customize.

For construction projects, we then translate those designs into detailed drawing schedules and technical elevations. Consider those elevations the instruction book that enables contractors to execute the design intent flawlessly — zero ambiguity or micromanagement.

As a full-service Seattle interior designer, we also manage communications with architects, contractors, and vendors to ensure alignment across all phases. The goal is seamless collaboration and a clear vision that leaves nothing to chance.

Installation Phase: Making your dream home a reality

This stage is when your home begins to transform. Our team oversees procurement, manages timelines, and coordinates with trusted tradespeople to bring every design detail to life. This is where the planning pays off: each finish, fixture, and furnishing arriving in perfect harmony.

Throughout this phase, we remain your single point of contact, ensuring your experience feels organized, transparent, and exciting. Our interior design services extend all the way to the final styling, where every cushion, vase, and piece of art finds its place.

What Makes the JND Process Unique

After a decade in business and over 600 projects, we’ve honed our design process. Our team bridges the gap between vision and execution so you can enjoy the process rather than manage the chaos. We intentionally take on a limited number of projects to ensure each client receives our full attention and care.

From traditional Tudor homes in Laurelhurst to mountain cabin retreats in Suncadia, our work is guided by one principle: coming home should feel like a warm hug.
